Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th, 1972. Being a single girl, she was raised also with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott went to an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was studying secondary education. Her dream was to become a English teacher at high school. However, she was not able to achieve the dream after completing three years of study and becoming a teaching assistant, she quit college. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform in poetry performances live. She later teamed together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. In the Roots performance, she came out as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained performance experience through the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first signing artist for the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
